The scam that is academic articles OR The Academic Industry
In the music industry, as this is the only medium I can relate to, when you make music a part of the fee is paid to the publisher of your work. A small meager amount is then passed on to you, the artist as your the creator of the work, and really, the publisher is there to advertise your work and cash in on your creativity.
This is not the case if you're an academic.
If you're an academic, you need to get peer reviewed, then published, you give your work away for free and the publisher makes a 100% profit on your hard work in research. They (researchers) spend years refining their knowledge, honing in on their skills and ideas, finding insights like a musician that been playing the guitar for years, finally being able to do amazing things and as a result, people loving it and wanting to find out what's the next big thing or the next amazing song.
Recently, peer review and the process for publishing had been exposed as being fraudulent for over 40 papers that relate to medicine, published by Springer and of course, their opposition Wiley jumped on the bandwagon saying that they say it's a disgrace. Well, sorry to say it, but the system for publishing work and peer review is a disgrace. There's no incentive to peer review, and to publish your work for no profit or recompense is the real issue.
So instead of this piece being about negative and attacking, what is it that we can learn from peer review, publishing and academia.
So, what it is you (academia) is to become like the Music Industry, or for a better term, the Academic Industry.
1. So, thinking like a rock star, you need to have a system that pays you royalties.
1.1 This means if you're really popular, you'll actually be paid more
2. Where peer review is credited to you so that you're a recognised reviewer of work.
3. This is all paid by the same style of commercial system that is currently run by large 'printing' companies.
So that's what you (academia) needs to do to get yourself out of the quagmire that is the commercial academic problem we face, in this way a lot of things become better, and the pursuit of academic achievement is also rewarding.
